You've come from around the world. With a dream. To work in American television and film.
THEN every casting director you meet tells you, "Get rid of your accent!" And you try. Maybe hard. Maybe not. Maybe you finally decide that you could never sound American.
IT IS POSSIBLE to learn to speak a believable American accent and be cast in American roles, both at home and in the U.S.
BUT FIRST, you have to accept four things: you have to work on it every day, you have to know exactly what to do and you have to realize that speech is physical it comes from the body, never controlled by the mouth
Here are a few tips:
1. Start by closing your eyes when you watch American films and television shows. That way the sounds get into your ear faster. Try doing it for at least 20 minutes a day.
2. Then, for another 20 minutes, watch the mouth of the actor on screen and you will realize that Americans do not control their speech with their mouth.
3. Finally, watch the actors with one of your hands lightly resting on your diaphragm (the muscle just above your waist). You will begin to feel the breath and movement of American speech.
DO ALL OF THE EXERCISES IN A VERY RELAXED STATE. DO NOT TENSE YOUR VOICE OR BODY OR FOCUS TOO STRONGLY. IN THAT WAY, WHAT YOU HEAR AND OBSERVE WILL GO INTO YOUR UNCONSCIOUS MORE QUICKLY. IN OTHER WORDS, IT WILL BEGIN TO BE SPONTANEOUS!
